Tugas Drama 'The structural elements of The Lesson'

   STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS OF THE LESSON COMIC DRAMA

1.    Characters
a.       The Professor, an old man who aged between 50 to 60 years old.
b.      The Maid, a woman who aged between 45 to 50 years old. She is good servant for Professor.  The professor usually calls her, Marie.
c.       The Young Pupil, a girl who aged 18 years old.

2.    Characterizations
a.       The Professor
A little old man with little white beard (physical qualities].
Smart, intelligent, educated but emotional (mental qualities].
Excessively polite (social quality],
Timid, very proper (moral qualities]
b.      The Maid
She is stout or strong, red-face and loyal with her master.
c.       The Young Pupil
Well-brought up girl, polite, lively, gay and dynamic.

3.    Scenery (Setting of place and time]
a.       The setting of time is at June 1950
b.      The setting of place is in Paris, at the office of the old professor which also serves as a dining room.

4.    Plot
a.       Exposition
In the beginning of this comic drama is introducing the characters, there are The Professor, the Maid and The Young Pupil. The location is in the office of the old professor. There is a doubles table as a desk and three chairs around it. The story is started by the coming of the young pupil that she wants to course with the professor because she want to get total doctorate.
b.      Complication
It is starting when the professor wants to teach about the arithmetic, linguistic and philology to the pupil. Although the maid had warned for the professor in order to don’t start to teach about this lesson because it will lead to dark things that may come of yet another lesson. But the professor didn’t pay attention about her warning. During the professor teaches it, the pupil got toothache. Then she always complaint about her ill during the lesson is given, but the professor don’t give attention at all. He instead continues to explain of the lesson more aggressive and dominating.
c.       Climax
During tutoring the pupil always complaints about her toothache, but the professor don’t care about it. He remains get along to explain the lesson more aggressive. The professor is explaining about how to speak the word “knife” with different language even he show the knife as the  model, but the pupil doesn’t concern again and doesn’t understand because she get much toothache. And this pupil’s limitation become evident, the professor’s frustration grows and this make the professor is emotional until uncontrolled. Suddenly the professor unwittingly killed the student with the knife that actually used for the model during the lesson. He killed the pupil in uncontrolled condition.
d.      Resolution
In the end this young pupil is burned by the professor and the maid along with the thirty –nine others.
But in the next session, this event is happened again like in the first. There is next young pupil coming again for tutoring with the professor.

            Based on this story the writer can explain that it is using traditional plot structure because it starts with the exposition, complication (raising action], climax and then resolution (falling action]. Although the events happened again as the evidence that it happened until 40 times.

5.    Point of view
This comic drama, The Lesson presents this story using third person narrator. The author points all character and positioning them as a third person.

6.    Style
a.    In the narration and dialogues of this comic drama, The Lesson, it is using standard grammatical structure. The dialogue and narration is using present tense.
There also find the comparison of sentence, example; so much the worse for me.
b.    The sentence construction of the narration and the dialogue is using long sentence construction. It uses subject, verb, object and modifier too. There is also find some clause, phrase etc.


c.    Figurative language
·         Personification
In this comic drama, the writer finds personification in sentence ‘Arithmetic is tiring, exhausting’.
·         Hyperbole
The writer finds hyperbole in utterance ‘it until the hour of your death’.
In the utterance that ‘Yes, young lady, bravo, that’s very good, that’s perfect, my congratulation’.
·         Sarcasm
The writer finds sarcasm in the utterance ‘Silence! Or I’ll bash in your skull!.

7.      Theme
It is about the intelligent teacher but very temperamental in teaching that he doesn’t like with the limitation of the pupil until the dark thing happened.

Conclusion
The conclusion is this comic drama includes the category of Mans vs. Society. It is caused that the conflict is happened between the humans. And if it is known by society, it will be related with many people. And in the end of this drama is a tragedy because it contains sad ending that the professor killed the young pupil.
